Thanks to a significant realignment of several sports streaming services, a single streaming service known as Venu Sports may provide fans with more sports content in one place—and with fewer required subscriptions and bills—than ever before.
What Do We Know Now About the All-in-One Sports Streaming App?
Over the past year, news has trickled in about what the new app will be and what it could feature. Following the initial announcement of the planned service in February, the service’s name was officially announced as Venu Sports back in May.
This proposed service is a massive undertaking among three giants of the entertainment and sports broadcasting industry: ESPN, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. Their joint venture (which will also create a new company) would cover all four American professional sports leagues and much more for a one-stop streaming sports experience.
This new all-in-one option sounds great, so you may be wondering why we are speaking about Venu Sports in a hypothetical tone. Unfortunately, there have been some roadblocks in getting this new service off the ground. In fact, just this past weekend, a federal judge blocked the venture due to a preliminary injunction by FuboTV. This is certainly a setback for Venu Sports, but since the owners are likely to appeal the ruling, it’s not the end of the road quite yet. How Much Would Venu Sports Cost?
Despite the launch timeframe being up in the air, we do know that the proposed pricing is $42.99 per month. This sounds pricey for a streaming subscription, but when you consider what sports are included and the price of competing options for streaming sports, it seems like a great deal for fans.
What Sports Would Be Covered?
The primary benefit of the new platform is the breadth and diversity of its sports coverage with a single login and subscription. That means football (NFL and college), basketball (NBA and collegiate play, including the NCAA’s ‘March Madness’ tournament), and baseball (MLB) will be there. Hockey fans are not left out of the action, as the NHL is included, too.
Even car racing fans can enjoy the app’s convenience, as NASCAR is also covered. Don’t worry; women’s sports will be covered, like the increasingly popular WNBA and the thrillingly competitive women’s college basketball season. Anyone who followed Caitlan Clark’s spectacular and record-smashing collegiate career will want to tune in for years to come.
What About International Sports?
Fans of great international sports like soccer, golf, tennis, and Formula 1 racing are also in luck! Indeed, the app is expected to broadcast the FIFA World Cup, providing outstanding coverage of one of the world’s premier sporting events.
What Channels and Apps Are Expected to be Included?
The app’s core is expected to come from 15 existing streaming apps and channels: ESPN, ESPN+, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ABC, Fox, FS1, FS2, TNT, TBS, truTV, ACC Network, SEC Network, and the Big Ten Network. The inclusion of TNT, TBS, truTV, and major college sports broadcasting apps round out the coverage to include just about every game available across multiple sports.
What About Bundling and Additional Savings?
Because the new platform is multi-company, customers should expect to have opportunities to bundle the new app with other services. Typically, those include additional benefits to subscribers, like cost savings.
For example, Disney+ and Hulu, which already partner with ESPN for sports content, will likely be eligible for a bundled package deal for all three services. Similarly, Max (formerly HBO Max) is expected to offer bundle deals when the new platform is launched. Indeed, the companies involved in the joint venture have already promised to offer such bundles, which could save customers even more.
