5 Simple Tech Tips Everyone Should Know
Technology moves fast, and it’s easy to feel like you’re falling behind. The good news is that a few small habits can make a big difference in how safe and confident you feel using your devices. Leading up to our free Digital Literacy Workshop in Clarksville later this month, we put together five simple tech tips you can put to use right now:
1. Give your passwords a quick check
Take a minute to look at the passwords you use most often. If any of them are a single word, your name, or something like “123456,” it’s worth changing them immediately. A password that mixes a random phrase with a few numbers and symbols is much harder to guess and helps keep your accounts secure.
2. Slow down before you click
If you get a text or email urging you to act fast, claiming you won something, or threatening to shut off a service, take a breath before clicking anything. Scammers count on you reacting quickly. When in doubt, contact the company directly using a number or website you trust, not one from the message itself.
3. Turn on updates for your phone and devices
Most phones and streaming devices let you turn on automatic updates. This one small setting keeps your devices patched against many of the security issues scammers rely on, without you having to think about it.
4. Real companies won’t pressure you over the phone
If someone calls claiming to be from your bank, utility company, or tech provider and says you need to act immediately, whether it’s paying a bill, verifying your account, or fixing a “problem” with your device, slow down. Scammers commonly impersonate real companies. Hang up immediately and call the company back directly using a number from your bill or their official website, not one the caller gives you. Remember, CEMC/Cumberland Connect will never call you demanding payment!
5. Save the number for who to call when something feels off
Whether it’s a family member who’s good with tech or a friend you trust, save their number somewhere easy to find, not buried in a drawer or an old phone. If you ever run into a scam, a confusing pop-up, or just don’t know if something’s legitimate, having someone to ask first can save you a lot of stress.
